50 Year Reunion for Leland High School in Campbell (Bay Area Dj Serving San Jose, Campbell, Morgan Hill, and Palo Alto)

About 5 years ago I did the 45th year reunion for Leland that we celebrated at the Los Gatos Lodge. I do remember it was a good time when I looked up their playlist from their first event I did for them. This list was a little different from the previous party since it was all old school. Last time, they had some current hits sprinkled in. This year we had the party in Villa Regusa in Campbell. Downtown Campbell is not the easiest place to park but there is first floor parking in the garage. You have the option of taking your do gear up the elevator or take it up the stairs. There was another function but it did not interfere with the function we were having. I was all set up and I was playing 30 minutes before schedule.

So getting music for this class was a good time. I looked at 1968 19691970 1971 1972 1973 and 1974. I found the best rock hits and dance hits. I always ask for a list to make each event custom. Then I combine all the songs on my computer. I strive to play all their songs on their list while incorporating songs I feel that would enhance the event.

The night started with some words with the host then the comedian started. Comedian was a pro who also graduated with the Leland class. He was a very funny guy who connected with the crowd who had the crowd laughing the whole time.

Big Corporate Event during a Weekday in Santa Clara for 800 people (Bay Area Dj serving San Jose, Morgan Hill and Gilroy)

Black and White Affair can you do an event on a weekday? Not a problem. Can you do it at noon? We can do it. Did we mention it is for 800 people? Only 800 people will be attending in Santa Clara, we got you. That is how we do it. We were emailed recently about doing this event and we didn’t flinch. They wanted to make some announcements and play old school music. They made sure we had insurance and added them to our policy for their protection. They had 5 LLCs and we added them all. They also had invited some food trucks so it was a festive time.

We welcome corporate events when they call us. We take pride is quick and prompt responses since we too operate like a corporation. Time is of the essence. We show up in advance and create the vibe for the event. We make sure our music is appropriate and loud enough for everyone to hear but not to loud that it disrupts people conversation if its dinner time. We judge on when to go loud or if it needs to be background music.

The stage was small so we had the presenters be the main attraction as we spread out the speakers in front of the stage to cover more area. The dj set up behind the stage but can still see what was going on so they can read the crowd. We love events like this because the employer is showing appreciation to their employees.

Real Life Events: Retail Dj for Sherman Oaks and Brea (Los Angeles Dj Serving Burbank, Hollywood, La Habra, Glendale, Reseda, and Mission Hills)

One of the most fun I have as a dj is playing at a retail store. The instruction is to play fun feel good music. This is as open format I can get. Open format is just a bit of everything. Typical djs stick with one genre. Open format djs cover a wide array of music to satisfy the diverse crowds. With Sherman Oaks I wanted to go with an old school disco 80s theme so I went that route. I feel Donna Summers was the biggest hits of that day. I was there for three hours and it was a good time.

For Brea I went with a Latin theme and old school plus some feel good classics. It was for five hours. Typically, when I play I give out a card or two but today I gave out like 10 cards and two folks talked to me about doing their wedding in 2025. What made it different this time around? I just bounced all over the place with some Latin gems then going to some 90s dance hits then hitting the disco hits. I added some dance hits the past 10 years. I think I solved the puzzle for a cool retail store is to play songs people know and play the original song. Nothing really needs to be housed up. People want to hear songs they know the words to. Also its good to smile at the patrons when they pass by and not be too focused on what you are going to play next but enjoy the moment and it makes the dj more approachable.

Real Life events: Djing  at Brea Mall Baby Gear Event (Los Angeles Dj serving Burbank, Hollywood, Brea, Chino  Hills and Mission Hills)

I love playing at Brea mall. Typically, I show up and play fun music but this mission has specific instructions. This time I was on the 3rd floor not the first one. Using an elevator is not an issue, it just at times takes a little bit longer to setup. I had to make sure it was not too loud since there were vendors there and keep it fun and lively and do some mic work. Mic work was easy. Every 30 minutes we were saying names of people who won baby gear prizes. People were just hanging out shopping and waiting for their name to be called.

Usually on the bottom floor I play a bit more Spanish by the make up area but today I wasn’t really feeling the Spanish vibe so we went old school. I went with a 90s vibe for most of the event but I would bounce around with disco and some 2000s music. Folks were really digging the 90s R&B so I would feed it to them. Big artists were like TLC and Montel Jordan.  When I was really feeling it I went like 45 seconds of a classic song then mixed in another song less than a minute later. We didn’t really play any hip hop today. The only tracks we played were Ice Ice Baby, Treat em right and a little Salt and Pepa.

Overall it was a good time and people liked the variety of music. Of course I came with my planned playlist but once you start playing you may have to change direction based on the feedback of the room.

50th birthday party in Saratoga (Bay Area Dj serving San Jose, Gilroy, and Morgan Hill)

Birthday girl needed to have festive Spanish music but most of the night would be English. I was notified that I would be able to drive up the unload then drive back down to park. I made sure I left really early to avoid rushing anything. I was able to park down the street and climbed the driveway which was a long as a football field. It only took me 3 trips to bring everything up. It was hot but we were able to set up by the shaded area. I started up with old school and kept it old school till it was dance time.  I did play one track that was too danceable and the planner said not yet then I quickly changed out of it. Maybe I was too eager to get the party started but I just did quick mixing with old school classics. When it was dance time, it was time to play the Spanish music. In the middle of that we had to cut the cake and then it was speech time. There were numerous speeches of appreciation. Birthday girl had a 4-page letter thanking all the people who she wanted to acknowledge.

My favorite part of the night was the 90s booty bass portion. MC Hammer and Ghost Town Djs. It seemed like the crowd was re living their college years! The guests were very appreciative and it was an overall good night. The hostess made me feel like a guest by always checking on me to see if I needed anything.

Saratoga Mountain Winery is a Good Prom Venue (Bay Area Dj serving San Jose, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Livermore, Pleasanton, Milpitas, Los Gatos, Gilroy and Morgan Hill)

We had the honor to do Westmont’s prom for the second year in the row. I love how the school picks a different venue every year. They went with the Saratoga Mountain Winery. The winery is located in the very photogenic Santa Cruz Mountains which is a fabulous backdrop for prom pics. There is plenty of space outside for prom folks to dance under the stars and bask in the fresh air plus be in beautiful surroundings. Just the ambiance of the location will make it a memorable prom night. We are all about having a plan B in Black and White Affair so at Saratoga Mountain Winery they have indoor facilities incase there is a weather hiccup.  When a school does rent out the winery then it gives it the VIP feel since students are the only ones who can enjoy the night there. The beauty of this location is that it is easy to get to from south bay schools.

So if you do want a nice outside venue then Saratoga Mountain Winery is a must. Westmost again gave us a great playlist to work with. Students dressed super nice and were polite. Party was  at 6 so we had to come in early to set up. We got there early to accommodate the venue then we were able to go back home to change and get back.

Overall it was a fun night at a nice venue. Definitely a memorable prom night at Saratoga Mountain Winery.

Two San Jose Proms on the Same Night (Bay Area dj serving San Jose, Morgan Hill and Gilroy)

Prom season is among us. We had a busy homecoming season so our playlists were current with the hits the high schoolers love. We love proms since they give us killer playlists every time we do an event and students take the dance experience to the next level. Prom for most students is a one of a lifetime event and it is our duty   as djs to give them the experience that they deserve.

We did Evergreen’s Prom at the Hayes Mansion. We have played there before and it’s a beautiful venue for any kind of event. The mansion is surrounded by 20 acres of pretty gardens providing beautiful pictures.  A positive is the venue is easily accessible from major highways. Evergreen always brings the energy for all dances.

Our other prom the school was Kimball High located in Tracy and they had their prom over at the Glasshouse. With over 12000 square feet of space, the Glasshouse can handle big proms with lots of room for dancing and socializing and have space for photo booths.

Dj Rich held it down at the Glasshouse.

How were the proms similar?  Both had positive vibes and students had a good time. Students were dressed super nice.  How was it different? The Tracy high school had more Latin music than Evergreen.

Glasshouse is also a beautiful venue at the heart of downtown San Jose.  We still have two more proms to go this season as of right now. We are looking forward to playing at a Saratoga Mountain Winery and at Levi Stadium.

Why should corporate events hire vinyl Djs? (Los Angeles Djs serving Burbank, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Long Beach, and Pasadena) (Bay Area Djs serving San Jose, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, and Gilroy)

Be the hip planner to incorporate a vinyl dj for the event. When a vinyl dj plays at a corporate event it gives is a vintage feel that can bring back memories and it can fit the theme and vibe of the event. Also just the sight of vinyl records is appealing and add to the atmosphere of the event. Just the visual of a dj switching records for each song can create a cool ambiance.

A lot of folks say that vinyl records do produce a different sound than of digital formats. One can say that vinyl can produce a warmer, rich sound compared to digital tracks thus giving a better listening experience. It does seem there are a lot of digital djs around and hiring a vinyl dj will bring a different experience that not too many folks have experienced and it would be one that truly stands out. I do have to say vinyl djs have the experience to solidify their skills since collecting records is an ongoing mission and djs take serious since it is expensive to maintain.

There is no such thing as a sync button (to have songs seamlessly mix) so these vinyl djs are more skilled to mix by ear. In a nutshell, vinyl djs at corporate events can create a unique feel to the event and make it memorable for all those that attend. Call Black and White Affair to bring the Vintage Dj experience for the corporate event.
