Weddings are beautiful events to be shared with friends and loved ones. One of the most precious moments is the sharing of the vows. We make sure our bases are covered when it comes to microphones and weddings. We always do sound checks before the celebration. But at the same time when guests arrive the sound may not be perfect. With guests in between the receiver and the transmitter, the microphone and everyone having a cell phone can interfere with the signal. The other day we had a drone above the ceremony and we can hear the static coming through the speakers. We had to improvise. We had the officiant plus the groom with lapels. Lapels can be tricky at times. Best thing would to be the receiver as close as possible to the transmitter or have long antennas or even better antenna fins so can have a further reach. We had to turn off the lapels and used the wireless handheld which was right next to the officiant. It did sound so cleaner and louder. It is all about being prepared. But even before the ceremony even started I had around 50 feet of microphone cable on standby with a wired microphone for plan c. Its all about having back ups to your back ups to make sure the sound of the ceremony. Some say it is overkill but I do not believe so. During ceremonies most djs only use one speaker and I say not me. I believe in getting two speakers to ensure a more full balanced sound and we want guests to feel the music and the powerful words of the offficiant.
Most of the weddings I do, we have a day of coordinator or I help with the planning of the events of the wedding. A lot of folks never really planned a wedding before so I give them suggestions and they listen too them and they choose what they like. Sometimes we have a planner at weddings from the start so they are in the loop.
I have the pleasure to work with a good wedding planner. Way in advance of the wedding she reached out and asked me if I needed anything for the wedding. She wanted to know if we had two lapels and if we needed special tables and linens. We already had everything so I thanked her for asking. I showed up the day before the wedding to check out venue layout and got to meet her in person. The next day before we set up I touched based with her with a few small music changes so she knew what was happening.
We went over the procession of the ceremony so we had our cues in order. There was a small change with dogs running in the ceremony so I was kept in the loop with that. Later in the reception she gathered the wedding party and it was my duty to announce them. Every time we hit an event on the timeline I checked in with the wedding planner to make sure dj and the other vendors were good to go. What was great was the good communication during the whole wedding. I definitely recommend a wedding planner for weddings especially one that is very detailed and good with communication. I did a retail event for an Outlet store years ago a few times and then I got an email for a private birthday party from the same manager. Client really liked the old school and we like playing old school so we were the right fit. We were playing in front of the house for this party. They suggested maybe only playing one speaker but I like playing two since it has a better balance. I just would not play it as loud.
They were really having a party. They had a taco guy in the front yard and everyone made sure they ate. They were also passing around jello shots and shots. I haven’t been at a party Iike this in a long time. Everyone was in good moods and we were playing the old school. A lot of freestyle and funk was being played. There was a group of 20 something year olds who stuck it out and they wanted some more current music. We throw on They are not like us by Kendrick Lamar which is probably the song of the summer and some bay area jams. I love the fact we can play old school then without missing a beat we can do a current hip hop set. Usually djs specialize in one type of music such as the most current music or the old school. But for us we love the old school but keep up to date with the latest music since we do a lot of proms and homecomings. Overall a fun party with great music.
Recently did a wedding downtown San Jose at a brewery. The brewery was in a different area and we had the whole outside to ourselves. We had a nice shiny dance floor where we held the ceremony. The ceremony was a tad bit behind schedule but we were able to catch up with all the events scheduled. The officiant had a nice ceremony and we learned more about the couple. After the ceremony we were supposed to do cocktail hour but since we were behind we jumped right into dinner without missing the beat. Sometimes you need to go with the flow.
The playlist had a lot of hits on it. The groom liked indie music so we played a lot of that. I was not familiar with his kind of music but I made sure I played it. We even went Bay Area music which was easy for me. I did like how we went all over the place to keep the guests on the dance floor.
Overall it was a fun intimate wedding. Guests were able to get their requests in and we played it then and there. We didn’t do the all typical wedding events. We did the toasts and the first dance plus father daughter dance and mother son dance. Sometimes we shorten the songs but they danced to the whole songs. Not all weddings are the same not they should be. All weddings shims be customized to each couple. We did not do a grand entrance since the couple was already at the venue.

In Today’s ever changing world of wedding, the traditional wedding planner are eventually coming to an end. This day of age folks are looking for something more creative and unique to make their wedding one of a kind. Let’s talk about the ever so humble dj to take the role of the wedding planner.
A smart dj knows how to get everyone on the dance floor and to keep them hostage there all night long! But knowing how to do that they also can help plan the event from start to finish. A good dj can provide feedback on decorations and menu. Since a good dj has been at plenty of weddings then they can give feedback on what works and what doesn’t. They also know folks in the industry who do good work in flowers, photo booths, and other vendors.
So this does not mean the thought of a wedding planner does go out the window. There are a lot of planners who can offer their services at a competitive rate. But if you are looking for fresh way to do weddings then do not look further than your dj as your wedding planner.

I was fortunate enough to do a party in the Bay Area recently and it was a good celebration. They just wanted party music. I was told just get Cumbia music and some old school. So I did set up the music but realized so what do they are going to listen to when they are eating. I was scheduled to play for five hours. Usually the first hour or so they will be eating then it is the dancing. I was told the party will be going on before hand and they will be eating before I start. This is my kind of party! More time for some dancing. They had a speaker connected to a phone and they were playing like slow songs for dinner. I can tell it was not music the party planner selected but it was something the venue put together. And I was right since the phone belonged to someone at the venue. They were going to have a performance at 430 so I was asked to be already set up by that time so I would not be a distraction. I said no problem. I got there around 4 and I was set up by 417. It was an easy set up. The performers asked if I can connect to their phone. It was 430 and I wasn’t supposed to start till 5 but I happily obliged and connected the phone and made the microphone available. They had a Hawaiian performance and they had dancers from all ages get down. They had a few drummers but it was very lively.
From 5 to 10 we went straight cumbia. We probably did 80 percent cumbia for 5 hours and did some ranchera music. We did a little old school but it was Spanish that got everyone on the dance floor.
In 2016, we did a fun sweet 16 party in Morgan Hill. They were an awesome family and I remember how awesome hosts they were. They made sure we had food which was so nice of them. We played in heir spacious home and the set up was in the garage but we had a 3rd speaker in the outside. Then 7 years later, the family calls me up to do a monumental 90th birthday party. This was an exciting event because we know Dad is 90 years old and can still dance up a storm. This time we took the party up North from the Morgan Hill Area to Half Moon Bay.
It doesn’t matter if your turning 10, 21 ,40, or even 90! We received a fun playlist from the family to make you to make you move! In this case it was a 90th b day party. In the beginning it was a relaxed setting at first while the guests were having dinner and drinks, and out of nowhere, everyone rushes to the dance floor as soon as they hear that first dance hit of the night. This song that hit so hard was no other than 50 cents in da club (its your birthday) song. And of course the birthday man himself dancing away like he’s only 30, the night continued on till the very last second with the nights top hits mambo italiano by Dean Martin, Yeah-Usher, Titi me Prengunto-Bad Bunny, Cupid Shuffle-Cupid, and Cha cha Slide!
This was a truly fun party because of the fun music and the energy of the birthday boy.
Right off the 101, south of San Jose is a great spot to throw an High School Event in the lovely town of Morgan Hill. Coyote creek golf course has a nice venue with semi- outdoor covered area! It would be an ideal place to throw an event in the warm months of the year. It is a nice place to have a prom. It had a wonderful view of the course and meadow! I was speaking with the coordinator of the dance and she was worried about the playlist. Her last dj was not following the playlist that she told him that they would like. We made sure we got all the songs they wanted and built on what they requested. We just don’t rely on their selection but we add songs that would go with the flow. Tj Williams (A Gilroy High School) students knew just how to have a good time with variety of music including top hits of the night Baby-Justin Bieber, I just Wanna Rock-Lil Uzi Vert, Payaso del Rodeo ( again), Low-Flo rida , and Hotel Room- Pitbull. As the night had reached its end, people did not want to leave. High School students still surprise me and inspire me with their choice of classic dance songs. It proves that good music never dies.
