Quinceañera in Saratoga banquet hall

I had a  quincenera event in Saratoga this past Saturday at a banquet Hall ( I have done all Spanish parties before but a quincenera is very similar to a wedding. Like the grand entrance for the wedding party and the bride and groom, thequincenera court and the quincenera are announced. Like a wedding, a quincenera does not have mandatory events. It is all based what was planned. We did not do the crowning of the quincenera since she already had a crown. During the party, the queincenera was presented with a doll. We had cake cutting on the timeline. One of the biggest event is the waltz by the court. Usually it takes months of practice. They have a formal waltz then often they have a surprise dance which is more modern and hip. There is an event called the changing of the shoes. This is when the dad gives his daughter new shoes as a symbol of the daughter going through a transition. Then after we had the father daughter dance. Just like a wedding, we had toasts and thank you speeches planned out. Our last event was the Last song meant for the Dad, Mom and special people.

The banquet hall was attached to a church. It was decorated with nice drapery. I had a very good playlist that the quincenera gave me. On the list there was not too many spaniish songs. A good tip is to have Spanish music ready for the quincenera. I had a lot of cumbia, and banda for the night. Overall it was a fun night. A mariachi started the night then I was able to finish it.

Dave and Busters as an Event Venue in the South Bay (Milpitas and the Bay Area)

Dave and Busters as an Event Venue in the South Bay

Dave and Busters ( is known as a fun place to have a good time with big screen tvs and to play video games. In Milpitas, they have a happening Dave and Busters where they can multiple parties at one time. They have multiple venue spaces and it depends on how big the party is. At Dave and Busters, they do have different packages offered with buffets and beverages and appetizer packages. In some packages, they give game cards to the guests. Some common questions answered:

I was able to communicate with the events manager to show me the venue before the event. I like to go to see where to park and unload and actually see where my equipment is going to be set up. She was awesome and was able to get me two tall tables to set up my equipment. I was able to set up 4 speakers and I was able to go as loud as I could without any limitations.  I was up on a stage and I had plenty of space for my equipment and set up my lights. The party started at 7 and the party-goers got the party going right away. The vibe was contagious and the staff was in a fun positive mood. They even helped me put my equipment away. I was in awe due to their awesome customer service. I was very happy playing at Dave and Busters. They venue was a big venue with a great staff that was easily assessable. I would definitely  like to play there again due to how professional the place was.

How to Dj at a Night Venue that has their own equipment? (Burlingame)

How to Dj at a Night Venue that has their own equipment?

A few years ago, I would be playing every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday downtown San Jose. It was an easy set up. I started off by taking 6 cases of vinyl then eventually went to a cd case. Eventually that evolved to taking blank serato special cds with a laptop with all our music. We knew we had the option of using CD turntables or record turntables. It was very familiar.

Recently got a call to do a happening spot up north in Burlingame. We played there years ago then started doing more of the mobile route. The question is what set up do they have and what would I have to bring?  I could go see the equipment before the event but that would require me to drive 40 minutes. I asked for a photo of the mixer and asked what turntables were being used.

The mixer of a top of a line Pioneer Mixer with two technic turntables. It is importatant to know the mixer so the dj can download the driver for the computer. Most often than not it is Serato Friendly. I was able to get the driver and install it on my computer. If one does not do that when the usb is attached to the computer it then it would not read it.

I also brought my controller as a back up in case for some reason the mixer cannot be read by my computer. All I would have to do was to plug in the master speaker cables to my controller.   I had to remember to bring my vinyl needles with Serato Vinyl. Everything worked perfectly.

I was able to talk to some staff to get a feel for the kind of music the folks like at the venue.  I already had my playlist, but it helps get that information.  I knew my age demographic was 21 to 35. That means get all the new hip-hop songs they play on the radio and get in some throwbacks.

The biggest decision of the night was what song to play after midnight. I love the old school and I wanted to throw in Too Short Blow the Whistle after midnight. But I had to succumb to playing G- Eazy’s Limitless. I had the track that was made for NYE and it had the countdown included as the intro. You just had to throw it in exactly one minute before midnight.

It is always good to be prepared. Make sure the computer has the driver for the mixer and make sure Serato Vinyl or Serato CDs are brought with needles. Once you become familiar with the set up then the back up will be easier.  It is always better to be over prepared then underprepared.

How do you plan a wedding reception? Black and White Affair Style (San Jose, Gilroy and Hollister)

The wedding day is one of your biggest days that you will always remember. Everyone who is important to you and your significant other will be in attendance. Is there a set formula for the perfect reception?

No two wedding receptions are the same. A wedding planner can be a timekeeper but at times, a wedding planner was not hired for the wedding.  The dj can be the pseudo wedding planner but well more like timekeeper.

A respectable dj company would meet with the couple way in advance of the wedding to make the timeline. Most of the time, the couples do not know what events that a wedding has and what is mandatory. The truth is that this is your wedding and there is no set format. It is all about the couple and about their dream-wedding day.

I suggest a timeline and the bride and groom can adjust it to their liking.

Typically the bride and groom will be taking pictures for about 45 minutes to an hour while the guest eagerly show up to the reception hall.

During that hour, guests get comfortable with nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages during the cocktail hour.

When the wedding party has arrived the dj can announce the wedding party individually or by the group with either specific songs in the background.

Dj will announcement the New Mr. and Mrs. (enter your last name here). They can enter with the wedding march or any other song to their choosing.

All eyes are on the Bride and Groom so they can jump into their first dance.  What would be a good first dance song? Maybe it was the song that was popular with bridge and groom were first dating or could be a song that one of the two who dreamt about being the first song. Say bride and groom love two songs that they cannot agree on. Dj can premix  or edit the songs so both songs can be played and will not be long.

After the first dance, couples usually do the father daughter dance then the mom and son dance.  Keep in mind that couples do not need to do the parent dance but it makes for a smooth transition.

At this time, the crowd is hungry and dinner will be served or the buffet will be open. At this time dj can play background music. Music should not be too loud so the guests can have conversation as they enjoy their well-deserved food. At this time Bride and Groom can go to table to table to thank guests and take photos. Please make sure you eat the food that you carefully picked out. You will need your energy for the dance floor!

The order of what comes next is up to the couple:

We have toasts from bride, groom, best man and maid of honor plus maybe parents want to get in the mix too!

Money Dance: Gives an opportunity for bride and groom to thank guests plus make some honeymoon spending money!

Garter and Bouquet toss

Cake Cutting: Often times that is when the Photographer leaves so the dj has to make sure s/he keeps the photographer in the loop.

Dance for all: the moment everyone has been waiting for!

Every culture has different customs that they can include in their wedding. Keep in mind that each wedding is custom event that could be magical for everyone.

Black and White Affair Dj Services: 2017 Prom at Club Auto Sport in San Jose (School Dance in the Bay Area)

At the beautiful Club Autosport in San Jose, Black and White Affair Dj Services hooked up their system with the house system, Easily, you can  have sound run through out the whole establishment with only 2 15 inch speakers. It was nice to have all that power already built in the venue. At the venue, patrons have the option to have a stage or not. There is a huge big screen located on the premise to show slideshows or videos.

Prom goers were dancing to their favorite tunes while being next to classic cars that they took selfies with.
