Recently, I had djed a Friday night retirement party in Mountain View. The request came through Instagram, and when I asked what caught their attention, the response was simple: “Good vibe.”

The event took place on a military base, so getting in I had to show my Real ID and checking in with a guard at the gate. Driving through felt like entering a small city—families, kids on bikes, and a tight-knit community atmosphere. The venue itself was a cozy event house with a kitchen, perfect for this kind of party.

It was a surprise party, and the wife of the guest of honor handed me a playlist that blended classic house and soul—right up my alley. She also mentioned the crowd was from Chicago, so I made sure to include some hometown favorites and even stepped outside my usual set to download stepping tracks I hadn’t heard before. Turned out to be the right call—those songs packed the dance floor and gave a lot of energy

As dinner wound down, I shifted gears from soulful background tunes to r  and b jams that got the  toes tapping. From classic 2000s hip-hop like “Snap Yo Fingers” and “Crank That,” to newer hits and East Coast throwbacks, the vibe started to feel like a real club night. Quick mixing kept the energy up, and people were dancing between the tables, without any hesitation.

Who was the real MVP of the night? The wife. She was the life of the party, pulling everyone onto the floor. It was a great night and a lot of fun.
